Sports

Today I woke up early so I could meet my friend at Russell House and help set up the student organization fair on Greene Street. A lot of clubs and fraternities set up tables with information and people to talk about their organization for three hours. It was definitely a hot day in Columbia, but this fair gives all students a chance to learn about opportunities on campus.

I had my FREN310 class from 11:15-12:05 and then I went to the Strom Thurmond with my friend Joanne. Since I was done with class, we were able to spend an hour or so sitting in the pool and just catch up on each other’s life. I love the outdoor pool because it makes me feel like I am at a resort!

After spending a little bit of the afternoon doing homework I went to Russell House for the first meeting of the semester for Gamecock Leadership Society. We talked about the upcoming semester’s events, expectations, and ideas. We are already in the process of planning this year’s Student Leadership and Diversity Conference (SLDC) for students nation-wide. As soon as this meeting was over, I had to run back to my dorm to meet two of my fraternity brothers to discuss Spring Fling and make sure we were all on the same page. Hopefully we’ll be taking a trip down to Jekyll Island this weekend to look at the hotel and rooms.

After a few hours of down time, I went to Currell for an Intramural sports meeting. I signed a group of my residents and other students in my dorm up to play co-ed football together. Our first game is September 12th, so I think we’re probably going to practice sometime over the long weekend. When this meeting ended, I went back to Capstone where I was on duty. One of the requirements for being a Resident Mentor is you are “on duty” a certain number of nights a semester. I walk around the floors with another RM and make sure everyone is being safe and abiding by school policies (such as respecting quiet hours after 10 pm during the week). It was a quiet night and I was able to finish my homework before midnight!

Schedule

I started my morning off by meeting some of my fraternity brothers in the “cubby” in the lobby of the BA before heading to class. I am a brother in a co-ed fraternity known as Delta Sigma Pi in which I am very active and I am one of the Spring Fling chairs for this school year.

My first class was MGSC 290 (Management Science) at 9:30 am which is a business class that teaches us how to use excel and other Microsoft Office programs. There are about 40 students in my class and we spent most of the class taking our pictures onto our individual disks so we could create a homepage on blackboard. Now, if I ever want to e-mail students from my class through blackboard, I can click and see each person’s picture.

My second class, ECON 221 was cancelled because my professor is spending the week in Italy working on a paper. This allowed me to meet some friends at Gibbes Court for lunch before going to my ACCT 225 class at 12:30 pm. The professor lectured for the majority of the class period and reviewed the key points from our homework before assigning new problems.

After finishing up classes around 1:45 pm I decided to work on some of my readings for classes and then spent about three hours playing basketball at the gym. I played some great pick-up games with the guys. My team won three games straight today!!

I came back about 5:30 pm so I could get ready to meet one of my fraternity brothers for dinner. My friend Ken now has my old position in the fraternity as VP of Scholarships and Awards and wanted my input on a few of his ideas for the semester. We then walked over the BA for our first executive and brother meeting of the semester. Our recruitment for Delta Sigma Pi is September 18-22, so we are busy making sure everything is in order for the semester and all our dates are set for community service events, fundraisers, socials, and pledge events.

This evening I was working on homework and talking with my residents in Capstone when the fire alarm went off and I had to make sure everyone evacuated the building. We spent about half an hour across the street while the fire department checked out the call. Then, all of us RMs had to watch everyone swipe there card so we could all re-enter the building. Thankfully this process went smoothly and everyone was able to enter without a problem.

Introduction

Hey everyone!! My name is Lydia Greene and I am sophomore from Tampa, Florida. I am applying for the International Business Program in March. I am involved in a variety of activities at the University of South Carolina, including: Delta Sigma Pi (Professional Business Fraternity), Gamecock Leadership Society, Capstone Scholars’ Program, Intramural Sports, the President’s List, Alpha Lambda Delta (Honors Fraternity), and I am a Residential Mentor (RM) in Capstone.

I think the best way to start off our new friendship is by telling you a little bit about my interests. I have a huge passion for basketball. I go to the Strom almost daily to play pick-up games with the guys. I spent my freshmen year creating a court reputation for myself so I am chosen to play by the guys. I also love USC sports. I have attended football games, basketball games, soccer and baseball games. Tailgating and time spent at Williams-Brice Stadium during football season are among my favorite things to do. I also love meeting new people, traveling, and being involved.

I had an amazing freshmen year at USC. All of my classes had between 10 and 40 students with the exception of my large PSYC101 class. I spent this time building relationships with my professors and I still keep in touch with many of them. I actually studied abroad this past summer for 6 weeks. I spent Maymester in England with a group of Capstone Scholars and received 3 credits for ARTE101. I then spend Summer I in Tours, France with my French professor and a group of other students who are working on their minor or major in French.

My classes for the semester have started off well! I am busy with readings for each class and using my free time to get to know my residents or go to the gym. Before classes began, I took my residents to see the Comedian Lee Camp in the Russell House. He was hilarious!! I’m excited about seeing the other four comedians coming throughout the semester, including Bob Saget!

I hope ya’ll enjoy getting to know more about me and what it’s like to be a USC GAMECOCK! Send me your questions at any time.
