First wave of acceptances are on the way
This week I signed the first twenty acceptance letters for fall 2007 entering freshmen. The Admissions Office is now officially in high gear for this coming fall. Fall is a busy time in the admissions office, and we like to be busy, but there are a lot of long days and nights ahead as we do our best to respond to students as quickly as we can.
You may wonder what kind of folks we have working in the admissions office, so I'm going to tell you. We are dads, moms, grandmothers, sons and daughters. You know, regular people just like you. Many of our staff are USC alums that love the college environment so much that they started working here after graduation and never left. Some are recent graduates that are in their first professional job. Some of us are career admissions people like myself. (I have worked at two other universities before coming to USC.) We all share some common traits: we believe in higher education, particularly the University of South Carolina, and we like helping people.
I like working in a university because it is a place where people can improve themselves, and in turn improve society around them. In short, it is a career where I feel like I make a difference. That's a good feeling.
